Love that bunch aline kominsky crumb6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() She was likewise very still, very composed, but now drawing people to her, inviting them into her art. On Saturday mornings she would hold court and kibitz with her friends and greet visitors. On a visit last year I remember seeing her in the front room of the gallery she cofounded with her friend Julie Katan. This was not “the Bunch,” this was the Aline who was prepared, steeled for anything after decades of creating and sustaining a life entirely on her own terms. ![]() I marveled at her at a gallery opening in 2019. But when she was seated in public she was perfectly still. At dinner she’d gesticulate and exclaim and oh it was fun. There were comings and goings, and Aline herself was a force of energy. Can you see my cozy bedspread? See my lamp? The wall color is nice! Cute, huh? In her home in the south of France she always seemed perfectly in tune with the colors and tones of the walls and furniture around her.įor such a quiet place, things in that remote village always felt like they were in motion. Red white & royal blue casey mcquiston6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() How do you know whether the humor is working in your writing? Red, White & Royal Blue is absolutely hilarious. I talked to McQuiston about the alternate political reality of her debut, the importance of later-in-life coming out narratives and more. This romance between cocky, charismatic know-it-all Alex Claremont-Diaz and his nemesis, Prince Henry of England, has everything-a raucous karaoke scene at a gay bar, cutthroat election shenanigans, a very romantic Star Wars through line-and McQuiston perfectly balances the escapist, fizzy fun of her setup with the emotional impact of Henry and Alex’s relationship. And as my increasingly impassioned text message history can tell you, Casey McQuiston’s debut was even better than I in my wildest dreams believed it would be. president falls in love with a prince of England? Put that directly into my veins. The second I heard the premise for Red, White & Royal Blue, I knew I had to read it. ![]() Gentleman Jack by Anne Choma6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() "I tried to find a voice that utilized a lot of the language in the journals, but still felt quite alive and fluid," showrunner Sally Wainwright told Smithsonian magazine. In Gentleman Jack, historian and series consultant Anne Choma draws from the explosive diaries of Anne Lister to recreate the life and times of one of the most fascinating figures of the 19th century. Gentleman Jack promises previously undecoded diary fragments, and a comprehensive introduction to Anne Lister’s life. ![]() I’m yet to get my hands on this one myself, but anything written by Sally Wainwright is a good thing. Anne Choma -the lead researcher for the project and the author of its companion book, Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister -would send the showrunner transcribed sections of Lister's writings. The Official Companion to the BBC Series by Sally Wainwright and Anne Choma. HBO's Gentleman Jack draws heavily from these diaries. The television show draws heavily from Lister's diaries. Lister's diaries have since been recognized by the UN cultural body and UNESCO as pivotal historical documents. “Most of the women Lister seduced were straight, but they were very happy to get back into bed with her." It’s very saucy and very riveting," Whitbread told the Guardian. "It is groundbreaking stuff, absolutely explicit, every action is described. But it wasn't until Helena Whitbread stumbled upon them and re-decoded them in the 1980s, that Lister's queer relationships were revealed. When Shibden Hall, the Lister estate, was turned into a museum in the 20th century, they were once again discovered. ![]() Mullet Madness! by Alan Henderson6/10/2023 ![]() In his book Mullet Madness!: the Haircut That’s Business Up Front and a Party in the Back, Alan Henderson speculates that members of ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia deliberately trimmed their hair into mullets in order to keep their necks protected and their eyes unobstructed. When people see a mullet, they tend to act shocked, befuddled, and offended, which is strange since the hairstyle has actually been traced back to the first human civilizations (you’d think the critics would be used to them by now is all I’m saying). Remember this detail, it’ll come in handy later. It’s also where the insult “mullet-head,” meaning dim, stupid, and literally having the intelligence of a fish, came from. With its unassuming silver scales, the species has served as an important staple of Mediterranean cuisine since Ancient Roman times. But first-what is a mullet? The hairstyle has many nicknames: “The Mississippi Mudslide,” “The Tennessee Tophat,” “The Missouri Compromise,” “The Wisconsin Waterfall,” “The Canadian Passport,” or my favorite, “The Achy Breaky Big Mistakey.” Most commonly described as “business in the front, party in the back,” the hairstyle also shares its name with a fish. ![]() The borrowers norton6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() To use it, you'll need your Federal Student Aid (FSA) login information and your W-2 or your employer's federal employer identification number to see if they qualify. ![]() If you're already working toward your 120 payments, you can use the tool to track them. The worlds they play out in too are different, ranging from gritty urban streets to the flat, dusty landscapes lining an unnamed highway. Although there are several threads that run through the collection – sex (very often between two women), desire and first love, alcohol, motherhood and human bodies – each story is distinct and sharply defined. This is exactly the kind of effect that Black Light has: small glimpses into fascinating lives that are so richly textured, so vividly described, that it’s almost like watching them in real life. Without ever knowing too much about them, you can enjoy a glimpse of someone else’s life, either forgetting about them afterwards or allowing whatever you saw to fuel your imagination.
