The original publication of the uncut version contained new illustrations by Bernie Wrightson and was titled The Stand for the First Time Complete and Uncut. In 1990, King revealed that he had kept the material, and was allowed to turn The Stand into an uncut version, as well as correcting time mistakes and adding popular culture references from the 80s and 90s, as the book took place in the future. The full edition is the longest book by Stephen King, both in page and word count as it nears 500,000 words. King agreed, and trimmed it by 500 pages (around 150,000 words). The book was the last of Kings novels published by Doubleday in October 3, 1978. ![]() King's original draft was 1152, but King's publisher at the time, Doubleday, forced him to "trim" the book, because they thought the book would not sell well if it was that long. The Stand is the sixth book published by Stephen King it is his fifth novel, and the fourth novel under his own name.
